      Mr. Shirley Scales and his wife Lettie, who came to Alpine in 1911, purchased this house prior to 1920 and owned it for many years. Mr. Scales established the Kandy Kitchen, a confectionary store, in Alpine. It was a favorite hangout for high school students until Scales sold it in the 1950s. The house was valued at $8,300 in 1930, twice the average for homes on Alpine’s north side.
